I can deal with fatigue, muscle soreness, or even a headache, but give me a stomach ache and my whole day is ruined. I’ve dealt with indigestion issues from a young age. I would wake up with an acidic stomach, belly aches, and a little nausea. No matter what I ate or did that day, it would just persist. It wasn’t until I became a Pescatarian in college that I felt a difference in my digestion. A little over a year ago I made the decision to add poultry back into my diet. I still limit the amount quite a bit because I do feel best when I stick with a vegetarian and sea food diet.
Sunday I woke up with symptoms reminiscent of my younger years. I knew exactly why though. I mean, it was Halloween weekend and I made the decision to set a little fire to the wind. I enjoyed dressing up as a mermaid and having drinks with friends (probably a few too many) Friday night. Halloween night I stress ate air popped popcorn topped with coconut oil and Himalayan sea salt and probably too many of my Healthy Halloween Candies (that stuff is trouble!) while watching a horror film with my boyfriend. Scary movies freak me out and I took it out on my snacks haha! But, it made R’s year to watch one with me so I’m glad I was brave enough to finish the movie without peeing my pants.
I live by the 80/20 rule. It’s what works for me and so many others. 80% of the time I eat clean, wholesome, delicious food so when that 20% comes up I can indulge and not have to worry about it! However, sometimes my sensitive digestive system does not appreciate my 20%. Though these symptoms are annoying and uncomfortable, they push me back to my normal healthy lifestyle where I always feel energized, lean, and just overall great. It’s a blessing and a curse. Satisfying cravings is healthy. But, it’s important to get back on track as soon as possible.
I started the day by going to my happy place, Trader Joe’s, to stock up on fresh produce, lean protein sources, healthy fats, and whole grains and getting my car washed (and of course it rained on Monday). When I got home my stomach had settled enough to go on a long 5 mile run. It sucked the whole time. I haven’t done a long run for a while because I’ve been concentrating more on strength training and HIIT for cardio. I still didn’t feel 100% when it was done, but I did feel a whole lot better.
Since food just didn’t sound good and the weather was beautiful, I decided to refuel with a smoothie! I know, not your normal fall lunch. Most of you are probably dealing with colder weather. But let me tell you, this thing is magic! It cured my stomach ache instantaneously. I couldn’t make you babes wait until warmer weather to reap the benefits! All of the ingredients in this smoothie help develop a healthy digestion system. But, the real rockstar in the group is pineapple. It contains bromelian, which is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes that help your body break down and absorb proteins from the foods you eat. It can also cure stomach aches, heart burn, and other minor digestive upsets! It’s okay that it’s not in season. Just buy it frozen. It’s the best to way make your smoothie thick anyways!
Stomach Soothing Smoothie
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup frozen mixed berry with cherries blend (found it at Trader Joe’s, duh!)
1/4 cup frozen pineapple
1/2 frozen or fresh banana
1 cup frozen or fresh spinach (I like to put in frozen to make it even thicker)
½ to 1 scoop vegan all-natural vanilla protein powder
1. Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
2. Poor into a glass and experience your stomach blues disappear!
