Another amazingly packed week has passed and I haven’t been able to write until now! With all the newness going on in my life, I think one blog post a week is what I can handle at the moment. However, I do post on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter more often! So, if you’re missing me the other six days of the week make sure to follow my social media accounts :).
From my new career, to living in a new city, to getting accustomed with a new lifestyle, there’s a whole lot of “newness” in my life. This past week I acquired my first personal training clients! I officially have a regular and it feels so good! Even more exciting, and of course a bit nerve-racking, is a whole other week of new experiences awaiting me.
This week I officially start teaching group exercise classes at the Peninsula Wellness Center and Carmel Barre! I love the performance aspect of group fitness classes. This definitely comes from my dance background. I can be quite the ham. However, group exercise is not as simple as learning a routine and performing it for an audience. When it comes to teaching classes, you never know who is going to show up, maybe a total gym-newbie or an experienced gym rat. You may even get both in your class and you want to make sure you cater to all of them! From the playlists to timing to verbal and non-verbal cueing, you can never count on one class going the same as the last. I am rehearsing on my own, but in my experience with co-teaching barre the past couple weeks, I know that getting experience in front of a live class is what’s going to propel me forward the quickest. So I guess that means… bring it on!
If you’re in the Monterey area, I would love for you to come take one of my classes! You can find my Carmel Barre schedule here and Wellness Center schedule here (though they may not have updated the November schedule online yet). If you can’t find a class feel free to contact me in the comment box below!
To celebrate the big week ahead, I am forfeiting sugar for 7 days! It’s no secret that sugar is not good for our bodies. However, what we tend to ignore is our reliance on the ingredient. Instead of telling you all the dangers of sugar and benefits of nixing it, I want to hear about your experience first! Did you have more energy? Afternoon slump gone? Feel less bloated? Really listen to your body and see how it responds. You’ll be shocked!
Naturally occurring sugar in fruit, plain yogurt, etc is okay but added sugars in protein bars, dark chocolate, certain pasta sauces, some condiments (ketchup and BBQ sauce are two big ones!) and granola are no-go’s! Read the ingredients on nutrition labels! You’ll be surprised how many foods you eat on a regular basis have hidden added sugar. I challenge you to take the leap with me! Who knows, maybe it’ll stick for longer. But, let’s be real, I am not missing out on baked yams or pumpkin pie at the end of the month and I wouldn’t ask you to either!
To kick off the challenge, I am sharing one of my favorite gluten-free, low-carb side dishes that only tastes naughty – Mashed Caulifower!
1 head chopped cauliflower
1/2 tsp Soy-Free Earth Balance
1 tbsp unsweetened almond milk
1 tbsp low sodium chicken or vegetable broth
Onion powder to taste
1. Bring 2 cups water to a boil in a covered pot. Steam cauliflower until fully cooked.
2. Place cooked cauliflower onto a paper towel and pat dry until as much of the water has been extracted as possible.
3. Place cauliflower, Earth Balance, almond milk, broth, and onion powder in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth! If you like your mashed potatoes chunky, you may want to leave some of the cauliflower chunky to get this same texture.
4. Serve hot!
Would love to see all of your sugarless meals, snacks, and progress throughout the week! Share your comments below and photos on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, tag @Eminspandex and use the hashtag #lis7daychallenge
